About Evergreen

Evergreen is the largest of the foothill communities west of Denver, a mountain town at 7,000 feet with Evergreen Lake and its ice rink at the center, elk herds in the meadows and neighborhoods spread across the hills between Interstate 70 and Highway 74. It has its own downtown, its own schools and a year-round population that commutes to Denver, works remotely or has retired to the pines. For buyers who want the mountains every day, it is the closest full-service town.

Location

Evergreen sits along Highway 74 and Bear Creek south of Interstate 70's El Rancho and Evergreen Parkway exits, about thirty miles west of downtown Denver, with Genesee and Lookout Mountain to the northeast, Kittredge and Indian Hills down the canyon to the east and Conifer to the south along Highway 73. Evergreen Parkway and I-70 are the commute; Bear Creek Canyon is the scenic route.

History and background

Where it sits. Evergreen is an unincorporated foothills community in Jefferson County, centered on Evergreen Lake and Bear Creek, reached from I-70 via Highway 74. It is about 19 miles west of Denver.

Evergreen is named for the trees around it. It is unincorporated, and an early settler, Thomas Bergen, built a cabin and ran a farm and boarding house, which is how Bergen Park got its name.

Ranching, mining, and lumber drove the early economy, and a railroad brought summer residents up from Denver. Evergreen Lake was created in the 1920's by damming Bear Creek.

The Hiwan Homestead, bought by one of Colorado's earliest female physicians as a guest retreat, is now a museum.

Why people like it. Evergreen has Evergreen Lake with boating, fishing and ice skating, a paved trail along Bear Creek, and nearby open space such as Elk Meadow and Mount Falcon. Its downtown has historic buildings, galleries and restaurants.

Fun fact. Evergreen Lake hosts an annual Skate the Lake celebration on New Year's Eve.

Sources and caveats for this history

Housing and architecture

The housing is almost entirely detached homes in unincorporated Jefferson County: 1960s and 1970s cabins and chalets in older sections like Brook Forest and Kittredge, 1980s and 1990s homes in Hiwan, the Ridge and Evergreen Meadows, and large custom homes on acreage in Bear Mountain, Upper Bear Creek and the Soda Creek area. Wells, septic systems, wildfire mitigation and winter road access are part of every purchase.

Parks and recreation

Evergreen Lake offers skating in winter and paddling in summer, with the Lake House and the Evergreen Golf Course beside it. Alderfer/Three Sisters, Elk Meadow, Dedisse and Mount Evans Wilderness trails are minutes away, the Buchanan Recreation Center and Wulf Recreation Center serve the town, and the Evergreen Rodeo and the Big Chili Cook-Off are the annual events.

Dining, shopping and daily life

Downtown Evergreen along Main Street holds restaurants, galleries, the Little Bear saloon and the Center for the Arts, with Bergen Park on Evergreen Parkway carrying the grocery stores, a hardware store and services. Hiwan Golf Club is private; the Evergreen schools, including Evergreen High School, serve the community.
