About Golden

Golden is the town where the foothills begin, tucked between North and South Table mountains with Clear Creek running through its downtown. It was Colorado's territorial capital, is home to the Colorado School of Mines and the Coors brewery, and its Washington Avenue is one of the best small-town main streets in the state. Buyers come for a real town with trails out every door, fifteen miles from downtown Denver.

Location

Golden sits at the junction of US 6, Highway 93 and Interstate 70 west of Lakewood and Wheat Ridge, with Arvada to the northeast, Lookout Mountain and the foothills to the west and Clear Creek Canyon leading toward the mountains. The Jefferson County Government Center station on the W Line is at the south edge of town; I-70 is the mountain route.

History and background

Where it sits. Golden is in Jefferson County at the base of the Front Range, along Clear Creek between Lookout Mountain and the Table Mountains, with I-70 on its southern side. It is about 12 miles west of Denver.

Golden was founded in the gold rush at the mouth of Clear Creek, on the last flat ground before the mountains, which made it a natural supply stop. The mining camp was first called Golden City.

It was once the capital of the territory, until Denver took over in 1867. The Coors brewery was founded here in the 1870's and is still headquartered in town, and the Colorado School of Mines was also founded here in that decade.

Golden's mills, smelters, and quarries earned it the nickname Lowell of the West, and Buffalo Bill is buried on nearby Lookout Mountain.

Why people like it. Golden offers a kayak course on Clear Creek, the Clear Creek Trail, the Table Mountain parks and a historic downtown. The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave and the Colorado Railroad Museum are nearby.

Fun fact. The Jolly Rancher candy originated in Golden.

Housing and architecture

Downtown Golden and the 12th Street historic district hold 1870s to 1920s Victorian houses and bungalows near Washington Avenue. The 1950s to 1970s built the neighborhoods north and south of downtown, and the Mesa Meadows, Village at Mountain Ridge and Canyon View sections added 1990s and 2000s homes on the slopes with views. Condominiums and townhomes cluster downtown and along South Golden Road; many of the surrounding foothill properties lie outside the city limits in unincorporated Jefferson County.

Parks and recreation

North and South Table mountains, Lookout Mountain with its Lariat Loop and Buffalo Bill's grave, the Clear Creek Trail and whitewater park, Golden Gate Canyon State Park and the Apex and Matthews/Winters parks make Golden a trailhead town. The Golden Community Center, Fossil Trace Golf Club and the Golden Bike Park serve residents.

Dining, shopping and daily life

Washington Avenue holds restaurants, breweries, coffee, the Buffalo Rose and a Saturday farmers market, with the Coors brewery tour, the Colorado Railroad Museum and the School of Mines' Geology Museum as the attractions. Colfax and South Golden Road carry the grocery stores and services, and Jefferson County schools serve the city.
