About Arvada

Arvada is the northwest suburb that grew from a 1870s farm town into a city of about 125,000, and it kept its downtown. Olde Town Arvada, with its brick storefronts, breweries, restaurants and a G Line station, is one of the metro's best small downtowns; around it are the 1950s to 1970s neighborhoods of the city's first growth and, west toward the foothills, the 1990s to current subdivisions of West Arvada, Candelas and Leyden Rock. It is a city with both a center and room.

Location

Arvada stretches from Sheridan Boulevard on the Denver line west to Highway 93 at the foothills, between Interstate 70 and Westminster's southern edge, with Wheat Ridge and Golden to the south and Broomfield to the northeast. The Olde Town Arvada and Arvada Ridge stations on the G Line reach Union Station in about twenty-five minutes; Wadsworth, Kipling and I-70 are the driving routes.

History and background

Where it sits. Arvada sits northwest of downtown Denver and straddles Jefferson and Adams counties, about 7 miles northwest of the Colorado State Capitol.

The Arvada story starts with Benjamin Wadsworth, a settler who claimed a homestead here in 1860 and later platted a town along the new Colorado Central Railroad. The name honors Hiram Arvada Haskin, the brother-in-law of Wadsworth's wife, Mary. Olde Town Arvada grew up as the commercial center along that railroad.

Prospector Lewis Ralston found a little gold here in 1850, long before the big Colorado gold rush. Later the farmers took over, and Arvada became famous as the Celery Capital of the World, with special shipments of celery even going to the White House.

Why people like it. Arvada has a historic Olde Town and three RTD G Line stations (Arvada Ridge, Olde Town Arvada, and 60th & Sheridan/Arvada Gold Strike) linking it to downtown Denver. The Ralston Creek and Clear Creek trails run through the city.

Fun fact. In 1947, Lloyd J. King, who started the King Soopers grocery chain, opened Colorado's first supermarket at 57th Avenue and Webster Street in downtown Arvada.
