About Wheat Ridge
Wheat Ridge is the small city immediately west of Denver's Berkeley and Sloan's Lake neighborhoods, once the carnation-growing capital of the country and still a place of half-acre lots, old greenhouses and mid-century brick ranches. Its prices sit below the Denver neighborhoods to its east, and its 38th Avenue and Ridge at 38 corridor has filled with restaurants and breweries. For buyers who want land close to the city, it is the first place to look.
Location
Wheat Ridge runs from Sheridan Boulevard on the Denver line west to Youngfield Street and Interstate 70, between 26th and 52nd avenues, with Arvada to the north, Lakewood and Edgewater to the south and Golden to the west. The Wheat Ridge-Ward station on the G Line is at its western edge; 38th Avenue, Wadsworth and I-70 are the driving routes.
History and background
Where it sits. Wheat Ridge is in Jefferson County just west of Denver, at the junction of I-70 and Highway 391, with Clear Creek running through it. The municipal center is about 5 miles west-northwest of the Colorado State Capitol.
Wheat Ridge started as a waystation for travelers and miners in the gold rush, and the name came from the golden wheat ridges people noticed along the Overland Trail.
Over time the wheat gave way to orchards and vegetable farms, then to greenhouses. The city's own history says it became the world's largest producer of carnations, which earned it the nickname Carnation City.
Residents incorporated in the late 1960's, partly because nearby cities were annexing land.
Why people like it. Wheat Ridge has the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt, the Clear Creek Trail, Wheat Ridge Historic Park and several lakes, with a main street along West 38th Avenue. It also hosts the annual Carnation Festival and has quick access to I-70.
Fun fact. One of the oldest buildings in Wheat Ridge is a log cabin from 1860 that sits encased inside a later farmhouse in Wheat Ridge Historic Park.

Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
The eastern blocks near Sheridan hold 1920s to 1940s bungalows and cottages, while most of the city is 1950s and 1960s brick ranches and split-levels on lots from a quarter to a half acre, many with mature trees and room for a shop or an accessory dwelling. The Applewood area in the west has larger 1960s and 1970s homes, and new townhomes and apartments have appeared near the station and along Wadsworth and 38th.
Parks and recreation
The Wheat Ridge Greenbelt along Clear Creek, with its trail, lakes and the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center at its edge, runs the length of the city. Anderson Park with its pool, Panorama Park and the Crown Hill Park lake loop serve residents, and the Clear Creek Trail continues to Golden.
Dining, shopping and daily life
The Ridge at 38 along 38th Avenue holds restaurants, breweries, coffee and the Wheat Ridge farmers market, with 44th Avenue adding more and Tennyson Street and the Highlands a short drive east. Applewood Village and the Wadsworth and Kipling corridors carry the grocery stores and chain retail. Lutheran Medical Center's campus is being redeveloped as the hospital moves to a new site, and Jefferson County schools serve the city.
