About Greenwood Village
Greenwood Village is the south metro city that holds most of the Denver Tech Center and, west of it, some of the metro's largest residential lots. The western half along the Highline Canal is a semi-rural landscape of one- and two-acre properties, many with horses; the eastern half is office towers, apartments and the Fiddler's Green amphitheater. Low city taxes and the Cherry Creek schools keep it in demand with executives and families alike.
Location
Greenwood Village runs from University Boulevard east to Interstate 25 and beyond to Peoria Street, between Belleview Avenue and Orchard Road, with Cherry Hills Village to the west, Denver's Hampden area to the north, Centennial to the south and Cherry Creek State Park at its northeast edge. The Orchard and Arapahoe at Village Center stations on the E and H lines serve the Tech Center.
History and background
Where it sits. Greenwood Village sits in Arapahoe County south of Denver along the I-25 corridor, and includes part of the Denver Tech Center. Much of the city is bordered by Centennial.
Greenwood Village takes its name from the old Greenwood Ranch, which Cyrus Richardson ran in the 1800's and which had eight reservoirs. Settlers came in during the 1860's looking for gold, and by the early 1900's the area was farm country. Rufus Clark grew potatoes here, and the district was also known for cherry, apple, apricot, plum and pear orchards.
In 1950 neighbors worried about being swallowed up by suburban growth. Attorney Rollie Enos suggested forming their own town and proposed the Greenwood Village name. The vote was close, 74 to 64, and Enos became the first mayor.
In the 1970's the Denver Tech Center set off rapid growth along the I-25 corridor, and the village grew from there.
Why people like it. People like Greenwood Village for its location along I-25 and the Denver Tech Center business district, plus Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre, an 18,000-seat outdoor concert venue, and the historic 1874 Cherry Creek Schoolhouse.
Fun fact. When Greenwood Village voted to incorporate on September 8, 1950, only 138 people voted at Curtis School, and the measure passed 74 to 64.

Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
West of I-25 the homes are 1960s to 1990s ranches and custom two-stories on acre-plus lots in neighborhoods like Greenwood Hills and Cherry Hills Farm, with a steady wave of rebuilds. East of the highway are the 1970s and 1980s subdivisions of Greenwood Village proper on quarter-acre lots, townhome communities, and the condominiums and apartments of the Landmark and Village Center districts near the stations.
Parks and recreation
The Highline Canal Trail runs through the city's western half, with Westlands Park, Village Greens Park and the Curtis Center for the Arts. Cherry Creek State Park's reservoir, trails and dog park are at the northeast corner, and Fiddler's Green hosts the summer concert season.
Dining, shopping and daily life
The Tech Center and the Landmark hold restaurants, hotels, a theater and the Comedy Works South. Belleview Station and the Village Center add more dining near the light rail, and groceries are at the King Soopers on Arapahoe or the Whole Foods at Belleview Station. The Cherry Creek School District is a primary reason families choose the city.
