About Green Valley Ranch

Montbello and Green Valley Ranch are the large neighborhoods in Denver's far northeast, between Interstate 70 and the airport. Montbello was built in the late 1960s and 1970s as a planned community of ranches and split-levels; Green Valley Ranch followed in the 1990s and is still adding homes toward Peña Boulevard. Together they hold a large share of the city's most affordable detached homes, with the A Line and the airport's jobs close at hand.

Location

Montbello sits between I-70 and 56th Avenue from Peoria Street east to Chambers Road; Green Valley Ranch continues east and north of 48th Avenue to Peña Boulevard and Tower Road, with the new Peña Station area beyond. Central Park and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal refuge are west and north, Aurora is south across I-70, and the airport is fifteen minutes east. The 40th and Airport, 61st and Peña stations on the A Line serve the area.

History and background

Montbello was one of Denver's first large planned communities, built from 1966 onward on farmland annexed by the city northeast of the old Stapleton airport. Its developers promised a complete suburb within the city limits, with its own schools, parks and shopping, and by the 1970s it was home to tens of thousands of residents, many of them Black and Latino families who found newer housing there than the older neighborhoods offered.

Green Valley Ranch, east of Montbello, was annexed in the 1980s as part of the land Denver assembled for the new airport, and construction began in the early 1990s as Denver International Airport opened. It grew into one of the largest neighborhoods in the city, with a town center, a golf course and schools built alongside the houses.

Both neighborhoods were shaped by the airport. The A Line opened in 2016 with stations at 40th and Airport and 61st and Peña, and the land north of Green Valley Ranch, around Peña Station and the Gaylord Rockies resort, is now the newest development in Denver's far northeast.

Housing and architecture

Montbello's streets hold 1960s to 1980s brick and frame ranches, split-levels and two-stories on 60- to 80-foot lots, many original. Green Valley Ranch is 1990s to current production homes, from compact ranches in the early filings to larger two-stories in the Town Center and Fairway Villas sections around the golf course, with townhomes and new construction near the 61st and Peña station. Most of Green Valley Ranch belongs to an HOA or metro district.

Parks and recreation

The Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, the Montbello and Green Valley Ranch recreation centers, Parkfield Lake Park, the First Creek and Rocky Mountain Arsenal trails and the arsenal refuge itself serve the area. Central Park's parks and the Northfield shopping district are a short drive west.

Dining, shopping and daily life

Green Valley Ranch's Town Center and the Tower Road corridor carry a King Soopers, restaurants and services, with the Gateway and Peña Boulevard areas adding hotels, the Gaylord Rockies resort and new retail. Montbello's Peoria and Chambers corridors hold grocery stores and local restaurants, and the Denver Public Schools' far northeast schools serve both neighborhoods.
