About Castle Pines

Castle Pines is the hilly, ponderosa-covered stretch of Douglas County along Interstate 25 between Lone Tree and Castle Rock. The gated Castle Pines Village, with two private golf courses and estate homes, sits west of the highway in unincorporated county; the City of Castle Pines, incorporated in 2008, holds the family neighborhoods east of it along Castle Pines Parkway. Both trade on their scenery, their schools and their open space.

Location

Castle Pines lies on both sides of I-25 south of the Douglas County open space that separates it from Lone Tree, with Castle Rock to the south and Daniels Park and the Backcountry to the west. The Castle Pines Parkway and Happy Canyon exits connect it to the highway; the RidgeGate Parkway station is the nearest rail.

History and background

Castle Pines

Where it sits. Castle Pines is a city in Douglas County about 20 miles south of downtown Denver along Interstate 25, with Castle Rock to its south.

Castle Pines is one of the newer cities in the metro. Before cityhood this was ranch and farmland that grew into unincorporated Douglas County neighborhoods. Neighbors started a committee in 2006 to look at cityhood, and voters approved incorporation in November 2007 by about four to one. The first elected officials took office in early 2008.

It started out as the City of Castle Pines North, and in 2010 residents voted to shorten it to Castle Pines. In 2019 voters approved home rule.

Why people like it. People like Castle Pines for its parks and paved trails, its foothill setting along I-25, and its closeness to Castle Rock and Lone Tree.

Fun fact. At incorporation the city was Douglas County's first new city since 1995 and Colorado's 271st municipality.

Castle Pines Village

Where it sits. Castle Pines Village is a gated, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Douglas County, on the ponderosa-covered ridges west of Interstate 25 between Castle Rock and the City of Castle Pines, which sits across the highway.

The oilman Jack Vickers assembled the land in the 1970s and opened the Castle Pines Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus design, in 1981 as the centerpiece of a private residential community. The club hosted The International, a PGA Tour event, every year from 1986 to 2006, which made Castle Pines known well beyond Colorado. A second course, the Country Club at Castle Pines, followed.

The community grew through the 1980s and 1990s with custom homes on wooded lots of half an acre and larger, and it has stayed unincorporated and gated while the neighborhoods east of the highway incorporated as the City of Castle Pines in 2008.

Why people like it. Castle Pines Village offers privacy behind gates, two private golf courses, pine forest and ridge views, and Daniels Park and the Backcountry trails nearby, among the highest-priced addresses in the south metro.
