About Castle Rock
Castle Rock is the Douglas County seat midway between Denver and Colorado Springs, named for the butte that stands over its downtown. The town has doubled in size since 2000, adding the Meadows, Crystal Valley, Terrain and Macanta neighborhoods around a historic core of Victorian houses and a Wilcox Street lined with restaurants. It is where south-metro buyers go for the most house and land their budget allows.
Location
Castle Rock straddles Interstate 25 between Castle Pines and Larkspur, about thirty miles south of downtown Denver, with Parker to the northeast and Sedalia and the Pike National Forest to the west. I-25 is the commute; Founders Parkway and Plum Creek Parkway are the town's main cross streets.
History and background
Where it sits. Castle Rock is the Douglas County seat, about 28 miles south of downtown Denver and 37 miles north of Colorado Springs, where Interstate 25 meets State Highway 86.
Castle Rock takes its name from the castle-shaped butte beside town. Explorers in the 1840's reportedly joked about it as Poundcake Rock, but the name that stuck came after a gold-prospecting expedition led by David Kellogg came through in late 1858.
In 1874 homesteader Jeremiah Gould donated 120 acres for the townsite, and the new town became the county seat of a redrawn Douglas County because of its central location.
Gold never made the town, but stone did. Quarries cut rhyolite from the buttes, and trains carried it to Denver and other cities, and some of it went into the Douglas County Courthouse.
Why people like it. People like Castle Rock for its downtown along Wilcox Street with independent shops, galleries and restaurants, and for more than 50 miles of trails, 19 developed parks and about 5,400 acres of open space.
Fun fact. A 45-foot electric star was built on top of Castle Rock butte in 1936, and it has been lit every year since World War II, usually from November through January.
