About Columbine
Chatfield and southwest Littleton are the neighborhoods that spread between the South Platte and the foothills around Chatfield State Park, the reservoir and open space at the south metro's southwest corner. Most carry Littleton addresses in unincorporated Jefferson County, from the 1970s Columbine and Chatfield Farms subdivisions to the 1990s and 2000s homes of Chatfield Bluffs and the Meadows. Buyers come for the lake, the trails and larger homes at prices below Ken Caryl's Valley and Bow Mar.
Location
The area runs from Bowles Avenue south to the Douglas County line along Wadsworth Boulevard and Platte Canyon Road, with Chatfield State Park and the reservoir at its south end, Ken Caryl and the hogback to the west, Columbine Valley and Bow Mar to the north and Littleton and Highlands Ranch across the river to the east. Wadsworth, Santa Fe Drive and C-470 are the routes; the Mineral station on the D Line is nearby.
History and background
Where it sits. Columbine is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in south Jefferson County, west of Littleton and east of the Ken Caryl valley, between Bowles Avenue and Chatfield State Park. It has a Littleton mailing address but is governed by the county.
The land was farms and ranches along Dutch Creek until the 1960s, when builders laid out Columbine Hills, Columbine Knolls and Columbine West on the plain south of Bowles. The subdivisions filled through the 1970s as the south metro grew, Columbine High School opened in 1973, and Southwest Plaza, the mall at Bowles and Wadsworth, opened in 1983 as the area's commercial center.
The community is known across the country for the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School. The Columbine Memorial, dedicated in 2007 in Clement Park beside the school, is a quiet place of remembrance, and the park itself, with Johnson Reservoir, the Foothills recreation facilities and the library, remains the community's gathering place.
Why people like it. Columbine offers established neighborhoods of ranches and two-stories on quarter-acre lots, strong Jefferson County schools, Clement Park and Chatfield State Park within minutes, and prices below Ken Caryl and Bow Mar next door.
Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
The housing is 1970s and 1980s ranches, split-levels and two-stories in Columbine, Columbine Knolls and Chatfield Farms on quarter-acre lots, with 1990s and 2000s two-story homes in Chatfield Bluffs, the Meadows and Roxborough Village toward the park, and a few townhome communities along Wadsworth and Bowles. Larger lots and semi-custom homes sit closest to the open space.
Parks and recreation
Chatfield State Park offers the reservoir's swim beach, marina, campgrounds, the dog off-leash area and miles of trails, with the Denver Botanic Gardens' Chatfield Farms, the Audubon Center and Waterton Canyon at its edges. Clement Park, the Foothills recreation centers and Ken Caryl's trails serve the neighborhoods, and the Highline Canal begins at the reservoir.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Bowles Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard carry grocery stores, chain retail and the Southwest Plaza mall, with Aspen Grove and downtown Littleton a short drive east. Jefferson County schools, including Chatfield and Columbine high schools, serve the area, and Littleton Adventist Hospital is nearby.
