Englewood
Bungalows and ranches just south of the Denver line, the Swedish Medical campus and a reviving South Broadway.
Pricing trends
Englewood prices below the Denver neighborhoods to its north and roughly alongside Littleton, which makes it a common first stop for buyers priced out of Platt Park or Wash Park. Renovated bungalows near Broadway and the Denver line carry the premium; original ranches offer the entry points.

About Englewood
Englewood is the small city directly south of Denver along Broadway, with the Swedish Medical Center and Craig Hospital campuses at its heart and a stock of early 1900s bungalows and post-war ranches around them. Its South Broadway strip has been filling with breweries, restaurants and shops, and the city's prices still sit below the Denver neighborhoods immediately north. It is a practical choice for buyers who want a Denver-adjacent address with a yard.
Location
Englewood runs from Yale Avenue south to Belleview Avenue between the South Platte River and University Boulevard, with Denver's Overland and Rosedale neighborhoods to the north, Sheridan to the west, Cherry Hills Village to the east and Littleton to the south. The Englewood and Oxford stations on the D Line reach downtown Denver in about twenty minutes.
History and background
Where it sits. Englewood is a city in western Arapahoe County immediately south of Denver in the South Platte River valley, bordering Denver, Sheridan, Bow Mar, Littleton, Greenwood Village and Cherry Hills Village.
Gold found near Little Dry Creek in 1858 drew settlers, and an Irish immigrant claimed a large homestead in the 1860's and grew produce for the growing region. The name Englewood was chosen because the area was known for its trees, and it means a wooded nook.
Five rail systems served the area by the 1890's, including a gravity and horse-powered streetcar. In 1903 residents voted to incorporate, pulling together settlements such as Orchard Place and Cherrelyn. In 1968 the Cinderella City mall opened, billed as the largest shopping mall west of the Mississippi, and the site was reshaped after it closed in 1997.
Why people like it. People like Englewood for its downtown core with light rail on the RTD D Line, the Civic Center with its library and Museum of Outdoor Arts, Belleview Park and the Pirates Cove water park.
Fun fact. The Gravity and Bronco Railroad (1892-1910) was described as the only gravity-powered streetcar in existence at the time, using horses to climb the hills and gravity to roll back down.

Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
The streets hold 1900s to 1930s bungalows and cottages near Broadway and downtown Englewood, 1940s and 1950s brick ranches across most of the city, and 1960s and 1970s homes and apartments toward the south. New townhomes have appeared near the stations and along Broadway, and pop-tops and rebuilds are common on the northern blocks closest to Denver.
Parks and recreation
The Mary Carter Greenway and the Platte River Trail run the city's western edge past Centennial Park and the Englewood Recreation Center, and Belleview Park has its farm and miniature train. Cushing Park, Bates-Logan Park and the Englewood Golf Course add to the list, and Chatfield and the foothills are a short drive southwest.
Dining, shopping and daily life
South Broadway from Yale to Hampden holds breweries, a distillery, restaurants, antique shops and the Gothic Theatre, with CityCenter Englewood at the station carrying the civic center, a Walmart and services. The hospital campuses employ thousands within the city, and groceries are at the King Soopers on Broadway or the Safeway on Hampden.
