About Dakota Ridge
Dakota Ridge is the community on the plain between the Dakota Hogback and C-470, south of Bear Creek and north of the Ken Caryl valley. It was built mostly in the 1980s through the 2000s, later than the rest of the south metro, and it sits closer to Red Rocks, Bear Creek Lake Park and the foothill trails than any neighborhood with a C-470 commute. It carries Littleton and Morrison addresses but is unincorporated Jefferson County.
Location
Dakota Ridge runs along both sides of C-470 between Morrison and Alameda Parkway on the north and Ken Caryl Avenue on the south, with the hogback and the Ken Caryl valley to the west and Lakewood's Green Mountain and Bear Valley to the north and east. C-470 connects to I-70 in ten minutes and the Tech Center in twenty-five; Highway 285 is a few minutes south.
History and background
Where it sits. Dakota Ridge is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Jefferson County, on the plain east of the Dakota Hogback between Morrison and the Ken Caryl valley, along both sides of C-470 south of Bear Creek.
The hogback that gives the community its name is the tilted ridge of Dakota sandstone that runs along the foothills. Arthur Lakes found the first of its dinosaur bones and tracks near Morrison in 1877, and the ridge's north end is preserved today as Dinosaur Ridge, a National Natural Landmark. The land east of it was ranch country until the 1970s, and the completion of C-470 in the late 1980s opened it to the subdivisions that make up the community.
The neighborhoods were built from the 1980s through the 2000s, with Dakota Ridge High School opening in 1996 to serve them. Bear Creek Lake Park, Red Rocks and the Ken Caryl trails surround the community on three sides.
Why people like it. Dakota Ridge offers newer homes than most of the south metro, the foothills and Red Rocks within a few minutes, C-470 for the commute, and Jefferson County schools, at prices below the Ken Caryl valley behind the ridge.
Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
The neighborhoods hold 1980s and 1990s two-story and ranch homes on quarter-acre lots in subdivisions along Alameda Parkway and Bowles, with 2000s homes and townhome communities nearer C-470 and a few larger custom homes against the ridge. Most belong to HOAs; attached garages, finished basements and foothill or city views are common.
Parks and recreation
Bear Creek Lake Park's reservoir, beach and trails are at the northern edge, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre and Dinosaur Ridge are minutes northwest, and South Valley Park's red rock trails begin at the hogback. Ken Caryl's trail network, Chatfield State Park and the Fox Hollow and Homestead golf courses are close.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Daily shopping is along Bowles Avenue, Kipling Street and Alameda, with Southwest Plaza and the Belmar district each about fifteen minutes. Morrison's main street and Red Rocks' concerts are the nearest nightlife, and Jefferson County schools, including Dakota Ridge High School, serve the community.
