About Ken Caryl
Ken Caryl Ranch is the master-planned community southwest of Littleton built on a historic cattle ranch, divided by the Dakota Hogback into the Plains neighborhoods east of C-470 and the Valley tucked behind the ridge. Its homeowners' association owns thousands of acres of open space and miles of trails, and the Valley in particular feels like a mountain town twenty-five minutes from downtown Denver.
Location
Ken Caryl sits in unincorporated Jefferson County west of Littleton, between C-470 and the foothills, with Columbine and Bow Mar to the east and Chatfield State Park to the south. Ken Caryl Avenue and C-470 connect it to the metro; Highway 285 and the mountains are minutes west.
History and background
Where it sits. Ken Caryl is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in south Jefferson County, in a valley behind the Dakota Hogback west of C-470 near Littleton.
The land has a long ranching past. Major Robert Bradford built a toll road in 1860 and a stone house, and James Perley bought the ranch in 1895 and ran cattle and dairy cows. In 1914 John C. Shaffer, then owner of the Rocky Mountain News, bought 2,660 acres, renamed it Ken-Caryl for his sons Kent and Carroll, and built the Manor House with 20 rooms. He ran beef cattle there but lost the ranch to the banks during the Great Depression.
Johns-Manville Corporation purchased the ranch in 1971, and the property later became the Ken Caryl Valley community. The restored Manor House is now an event venue.
Why people like it. People like Ken Caryl for its setting behind the hogback, with red rock South Valley Park nearby, about 4,800 acres of open space with trailheads, and the historic Manor House.
Fun fact. The Manor House Shaffer built has 8,000 square feet of living space, 20 rooms and six baths.
