About Sheridan

Sheridan is the two-square-mile city on the west bank of the South Platte south of Denver's Harvey Park and Bear Valley, between Federal Boulevard and the river. It grew around Fort Logan and the rail lines, stayed modest while its neighbors rebuilt, and in the last decade gained the River Point at Sheridan shopping center and a light rail station. Its ranches and cottages remain some of the most attainable homes in the south-central metro.

Location

Sheridan runs from Dartmouth Avenue south to Quincy Avenue between Federal Boulevard and the South Platte, with Englewood across the river to the east, Denver's Bear Valley and Fort Logan to the north and west, and Littleton to the south. The Oxford station on the D Line and the Englewood station are close; Santa Fe Drive and Hampden Avenue are the driving routes.

History and background

Where it sits. Sheridan is a small city in Arapahoe County about 10 miles south of Denver, bordered by Denver and Englewood and crossed by US 85, US 285 and State Highway 88.

Peter Magnes, a Swedish immigrant farmer, blacksmith and veterinarian, bought land south of Denver and founded Petersburg in 1865, inviting Swedish families to settle. The town grew to include hotels, taverns, shops, a church and a post office.

The community was renamed Sheridan in November 1887, in a local name change effort, honoring General Philip H. Sheridan, a Union cavalry commander whose leadership in the last year of the Civil War helped defeat the Confederate army. Sheridan incorporated in April 1890 and has stayed a compact city.

Why people like it. People like Sheridan for its crossroads of US 85, US 285 and Highway 88 and for its light rail connection, which began in 2000.

Fun fact. In 1865 Peter Magnes imported machinery to process sugar beets, helping launch Colorado's sugar beet industry.

Housing and architecture

The housing is 1940s to 1960s frame and brick cottages and ranches on small to mid-size lots, with manufactured-home communities, 1970s apartments and some newer townhomes near River Point and the river. Many homes are original, and the city has seen renovation and infill as Englewood and Denver prices rose around it.

Parks and recreation

The Mary Carter Greenway and Platte River Trail run the city's eastern edge, with Sheridan's Clay Street Park, the Fort Logan National Cemetery grounds to the west and Bear Creek Park and the Bear Creek Trail at the north end. South Suburban's Sheridan Recreation Center and Pirates Cove water park in Englewood are nearby.

Dining, shopping and daily life

River Point at Sheridan holds a Target, a Costco, a theater and chain restaurants, and Federal Boulevard and Hampden Avenue carry grocery stores and local restaurants. Englewood's South Broadway and Littleton's Main Street are each a few minutes away. Sheridan School District 2 serves the city.
