About Windsor
Windsor is the southeast Denver neighborhood between Lowry and the Aurora line, known for Windsor Gardens, the 1960s condominium community for residents 55 and older that is the largest of its kind in the city, and for the Highline Canal Trail that curves through it. Around the Gardens are 1960s and 1970s subdivisions, apartment communities and the Fairmount Cemetery grounds, with Lowry's town center and Cherry Creek State Park a short drive.
Location
Windsor runs from Alameda Avenue south to Mississippi Avenue between Quebec Street and the Aurora line at Havana Street, with Lowry to the north, Washington Virginia Vale to the west, Goldsmith and Indian Creek to the south and Aurora east. Alameda, Mississippi and Havana are the main routes; the Anschutz Medical Campus is fifteen minutes north.
History and background
Fairmount Cemetery opened in 1890 on the prairie southeast of Denver, laid out by the German landscape architect Reinhard Schuetze with the trees and curving drives that made it the city's garden cemetery. The Highline Canal, dug in 1883 to carry irrigation water from the South Platte, curved past it, and the land between stayed farms into the 1950s.
Denver annexed the area as the city spread toward the Lowry air base, and Windsor Gardens opened in 1963 as one of the first large retirement condominium communities in the country, built around its own golf course and clubhouse. The subdivisions and apartment communities around it followed through the 1960s and 1970s.
The Highline Canal Trail, developed along the canal's maintenance road from the 1970s on, became the neighborhood's connecting path, and the closing of Lowry Air Force Base in 1994 and its rebuilding as a neighborhood gave Windsor a town center and parks at its northern edge.
Housing and architecture
Windsor Gardens' 2,700 condominiums, in two-story and mid-rise buildings around its own golf course and community center, make up much of the neighborhood's housing and nearly all of its resale market. Around it are 1960s and 1970s brick ranches and two-stories in the Windsor and Fairmount subdivisions and 1970s and 1980s apartment communities along Alameda and Mississippi.
Parks and recreation
The Highline Canal Trail runs through the neighborhood past Fairmount Cemetery's 280 acres of trees and the Windsor Gardens golf course, which the community owns. Lowry's Great Lawn and sports complex are north, Cherry Creek State Park is a short drive south and Del Mar Park's pool is across the Aurora line.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Windsor Gardens has its own community center, restaurant, pool and activities, and the Alameda and Havana corridors carry grocery stores, restaurants and services. Lowry Town Center, Boulevard One and the Hangar 2 restaurants are north, and the Cherry Creek shopping district is fifteen minutes west.
