About Belmar

Belmar is the walkable district at the center of Lakewood, built in the early 2000s on the site of the Villa Italia mall as a grid of streets with shops, restaurants, apartments and condominiums. Around it are Belmar Park, with its lake and the Lakewood Heritage Center, and the 1950s and 1960s neighborhoods that make up most of central Lakewood. It gives the city's largest suburb a downtown and buyers a place to walk to dinner.

Location

Belmar sits at Alameda Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in central Lakewood, with Belmar Park to the southwest, the Lakewood civic center to the west, Denver's Westwood and Barnum neighborhoods about two miles east and Green Mountain to the west. Wadsworth and Alameda are the routes; the Lakewood and Wadsworth stations on the W Line are a short drive north.

History and background

Belmar was the estate of May Bonfils Stanton, heiress to the Denver Post fortune, who built a mansion modeled on the Petit Trianon on 750 acres in what was then rural Jefferson County in 1937. After her death the estate was broken up, the mansion was demolished in 1971, and part of the land became Belmar Park, where the Lakewood Heritage Center preserves twentieth-century buildings from across the area.

The Villa Italia shopping mall opened on the estate's northern land in 1966, one of the first enclosed malls in the region and the commercial heart of Lakewood, which incorporated as a city only in 1969. By the 1990s the mall was failing, and the city and a developer replaced it, beginning in 2001, with Belmar: a grid of streets, shops, restaurants, apartments and public plazas designed to give Lakewood the downtown it never had.

The neighborhoods around Belmar date from Lakewood's post-war growth in the 1950s and 1960s, when the farms and orchards along Alameda Avenue became the brick-ranch subdivisions that still surround the district.

Housing and architecture

The district itself holds 2000s condominiums, townhomes and apartments above and beside the shops, with more apartments added since 2015. The surrounding neighborhoods, from Belmar Park to Glennon Heights and the blocks along Alameda, are 1950s and 1960s brick ranches and split-levels on quarter-acre lots, many renovated, with a few 1970s townhome communities.

Parks and recreation

Belmar Park's lake loop, the Lakewood Heritage Center's museum and vintage buildings, the Lakewood Link recreation center and Addenbrooke Park serve the area, with Bear Creek Lake Park and Green Mountain's trails a short drive west. The Belmar plaza hosts summer concerts, an ice rink in winter and a farmers market.

Dining, shopping and daily life

Belmar's streets hold a Whole Foods, a Target, a theater, Lakewood's restaurants and breweries, the Lakewood Cultural Center and the Belmar Library, with Alameda and Wadsworth carrying more grocery stores and services. The city's civic center and St. Anthony Hospital are nearby, and Jefferson County schools serve the area.
