About Edgewater
Edgewater is the tiny city on the western shore of Sloan's Lake, just across Sheridan Boulevard from Denver. For decades it was a quiet grid of small brick homes; in the last ten years its 25th Avenue strip and the Edgewater Public Market food hall have turned it into a destination, and its prices have followed the Sloan's Lake and Highlands market next door while staying a step below it.
Location
Edgewater runs from Sheridan Boulevard west to Harlan Street and from 20th Avenue north to 26th Avenue, with Sloan's Lake and Denver's Sloan's Lake neighborhood to the east, Wheat Ridge to the north and Lakewood to the west and south. The Sheridan station on the W Line is a short walk south; downtown Denver is ten minutes by car.
History and background
Where it sits. Edgewater is a compact city in Jefferson County, with Denver on its east, Wheat Ridge on the north, and Lakewood on the south and west. Sheridan Boulevard is its main commercial route, and 25th Avenue serves as its Main Street.
Edgewater is named for the water's edge, referring to Sloan's Lake. The lake now lies entirely inside Denver, just east of town.
About 300 residents voted to incorporate in 1901, with state recognition in 1904. Streetcars, including a West End line that opened in 1890, connected the area to Denver and the Manhattan Beach amusement park on the lake's northwest shore.
Early leaders built boardwalks and brought in piped water, telephone and electricity. The 1889 Orum House, the second dwelling built in Edgewater, was bought by the city in 1982 and is now a museum.
Why people like it. People like Edgewater for its closeness to Sloan's Lake, the 25th Avenue Main Street and the historic Orum House museum.
Fun fact. The tiny Orum House, built in 1889 on Depew Street, is only 534 square feet, and its last resident, Emma Orum, kept goats in the cellar in winter to protect them from freezing.

Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
The streets hold 1910s to 1950s brick and frame cottages, bungalows and small ranches on 25- to 50-foot lots, with a wave of new duplexes, townhomes and scrape-and-rebuild homes since the mid-2010s, especially on the blocks closest to the lake. New apartments and condominiums sit along Sheridan and 20th Avenue.
Parks and recreation
Sloan's Lake Park, with its loop, boathouse and views of the skyline, is the front yard, and Edgewater's Citizens Park and the Edgewater Civic Center's recreation space serve the city. Crown Hill Park's lake loop is a short drive north, and the Lakewood Gulch and W Line trails lead toward downtown.
Dining, shopping and daily life
West 25th Avenue holds restaurants, breweries, coffee and the city's small shops, and the Edgewater Public Market on 20th Avenue adds a food hall, a brewery and a Saturday market. The Sloan's Lake and Highlands dining districts are minutes away, and groceries are at the King Soopers at 26th and Sheridan or the Target on Colfax.
