About Morrison
Morrison is the small town at the mouth of Bear Creek Canyon below Red Rocks Amphitheatre, with a main street of 1870s and 1880s stone and brick buildings that fills with concertgoers on summer nights. The town itself has only a few hundred residents; the Morrison address covers the foothill neighborhoods of Willow Springs, Ken Caryl's edge and the hills along Highway 285 and Bear Creek, where buyers get mountain living twenty-five minutes from downtown.
Location
Morrison sits where Bear Creek leaves the foothills, south of Golden and west of Lakewood, with Red Rocks Park and Mount Falcon to the west and C-470 at its eastern edge. Highway 285 and Bear Creek Canyon lead into the mountains, and C-470 connects to Golden, Lakewood and the south metro.
History and background
Where it sits. Morrison is a small foothills town in Jefferson County at the mouth of Bear Creek Canyon, along Bear Creek just south of Red Rocks Park. It is about 20 miles southwest of Denver.
Morrison was a stone town. George Morrison, a Canadian-born stonemason, opened quarries here and platted the town, and the stone went into buildings in Denver.
Dinosaur bones found nearby in the 1870's, including Stegosaurus, helped set off the so-called Bone Wars between rival fossil hunters.
Just up the road, Red Rocks was once called the Garden of the Titans. Workers in the 1930's built the amphitheatre, which opened in 1941 and is now a National Historic Landmark.
Why people like it. Morrison has a historic district of red sandstone buildings and a main street of restaurants and shops at the mouth of Bear Creek Canyon. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is just above town, with Dinosaur Ridge and Bear Creek Lake Park nearby.
Fun fact. The first Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus fossils were found near Morrison in 1877 by Arthur Lakes, which led to the naming of the Morrison Formation.
