About Green Mountain
Green Mountain is the west side of Lakewood, the neighborhoods that climb the lower slopes of William F. Hayden Green Mountain Park and spread along Alameda Parkway toward C-470. Built from the 1960s through the 1980s, it offers larger lots, views of the city and the foothills and a trailhead at the end of most streets, with Red Rocks and I-70's mountain route minutes away. It is where west-metro buyers go for the outdoors without leaving the suburbs.
Location
Green Mountain runs from Kipling Street west to C-470 and the park, between 6th Avenue and Alameda Parkway and south toward Bear Creek Lake Park, with the Federal Center and the W Line's terminus to the north, Belmar and central Lakewood to the east and Morrison and Golden to the southwest. 6th Avenue, Alameda and C-470 are the routes; the Jefferson County Government Center station is close.
History and background
Green Mountain, the 6,800-foot mesa at the western edge of Lakewood, was ranch land and the site of a few quarries through the first half of the twentieth century. William Frederick Hayden, a Lakewood developer, assembled the land in the 1960s and planned the neighborhoods on its lower slopes; the park at the top that bears his name was preserved by the city after his death.
The Green Mountain Village subdivision, built from the early 1960s, was one of the largest developments of Lakewood's post-war boom, with brick ranches and split-levels on larger lots than the city's older neighborhoods. The Denver Federal Center, the former Remington Arms ordnance plant that became the largest concentration of federal agencies outside Washington, employed many of its first residents.
The neighborhoods climbed the mountain through the 1970s and 1980s, the city opened Bear Creek Lake Park beside them in 1982, and the completion of C-470 and the W Line's terminus at the Jefferson County Government Center tied the area to the metro's highway and rail networks.
Housing and architecture
The streets hold 1960s and 1970s brick ranches, split-levels and two-stories on 70- to 90-foot lots in Green Mountain Village and the Hutchinson sections, with 1980s and 1990s homes in Green Mountain Estates, Mesa View and the slopes nearest the park. Townhomes and condominiums sit along Alameda and near Union Boulevard. Many homes have walkout basements and views.
Parks and recreation
William F. Hayden Green Mountain Park's trails and 6,800-foot summit, Bear Creek Lake Park's reservoir and beach, the Fox Hollow and Homestead golf courses, the Green Mountain Recreation Center and the Dinosaur Ridge and Red Rocks parks across C-470 serve the area.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Union Boulevard and the 6th Avenue and Simms corridor carry grocery stores, restaurants and the Federal Center area's offices, with Colorado Mills mall and Belmar each a short drive. The Jefferson County schools, including Green Mountain High School, serve the neighborhood, and St. Anthony Hospital is nearby at the Federal Center.
