About Erie
Erie is the town on the Boulder and Weld county line northeast of Lafayette, a coal-mining settlement from the 1870s whose Old Town along Briggs Street is now surrounded by 2000s to current subdivisions. It has grown from a few thousand residents to more than thirty thousand, with new neighborhoods like Flatiron Meadows, Erie Highlands and Colliers Hill stretching toward Interstate 25, and it offers new construction with Boulder County schools and views at prices below Louisville and Superior.
Location
Erie runs from Lafayette's eastern edge east to Interstate 25 and from Broomfield's northern edge north to Highway 52, with Longmont to the north, Boulder fifteen miles west and downtown Denver about thirty miles southeast. Highway 7, Erie Parkway and I-25 are the routes; the Northwest Parkway and US 36 reach Denver and Boulder.
History and background
Erie was founded in 1871 by Richard Van Valkenburg, a Methodist minister from Erie, Pennsylvania, who opened the first coal mine in the area and named the new town after his home. The Boulder Valley coalfield's underground mines employed generations of miners from Britain, Italy and Eastern Europe, and Erie's Briggs Street grew up as their main street.
The last of the mines closed in the 1970s, and for twenty years Erie was a quiet farm town of about a thousand people on the Boulder and Weld county line. Old Town kept its miners' cottages, its 1890s storefronts and the memory of the mines in the names of its streets and parks.
Growth arrived in the late 1990s as Boulder County's housing prices pushed buyers east. Subdivisions spread across the farmland toward Interstate 25, the town built a new community center and parks, and Erie's population grew from about 1,300 in 1990 to more than 30,000, making it one of the fastest-growing towns on the Front Range.
Housing and architecture
Old Town Erie holds 1890s to 1940s miners' cottages and a few newer homes on the historic grid. Nearly everything else is 1990s to current production and semi-custom homes: Vista Ridge and Vista Pointe around the golf course, Flatiron Meadows, Erie Highlands, Colliers Hill, Morgan Hill and the newest filings along Erie Parkway. Townhomes and paired homes cluster in Erie Commons and near Old Town, and most neighborhoods belong to metro districts and HOAs.
Parks and recreation
The Erie Community Center, Erie Community Park, Coal Creek Trail, the Vista Ridge golf course at Colorado National and the Erie Reservoir area serve the town, with the Boulder County open space and the Rock Creek and Coal Creek corridors connecting to Lafayette and Louisville. Erie Municipal Airport hosts the summer air show.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Old Town's Briggs Street holds restaurants, a brewery, coffee and the Erie farmers market, with Erie Commons and the Highway 7 and Erie Parkway corridors carrying grocery stores and chain retail. The Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts split the town along the county line, which affects which schools a home attends.
