About Louisville
Louisville is the small city between Boulder and Broomfield that began as a coal-mining camp in 1877 and became, a century later, a regular on lists of the best places to live in America. Its downtown along Main Street and Front Street holds restaurants, a summer street-faire series and the old miners' cottages; its neighborhoods spread east with 1970s to 2000s homes. The 2021 Marshall Fire destroyed hundreds of homes in its southern sections, and rebuilding has reshaped those blocks with new construction.
Location
Louisville sits along US 36 and McCaslin Boulevard between Superior and Lafayette, with Boulder ten minutes northwest, Broomfield to the southeast and Davidson Mesa's open space on its western edge. The Flatiron Flyer stops at McCaslin reach Boulder and Denver; South Boulder Road and Highway 42 connect to Lafayette.
History and background
Where it sits. Louisville is in southeastern Boulder County, with U.S. 36 along its southwestern side between Denver and Boulder.
Louisville was platted in 1878 by Louis Nawatny, who named it after himself. Coal came first, though, with the Welch Mine opening in 1877 as the first coal mine in the Northern Coalfield, and at the peak a dozen mines were running at once.
Miners came from northern, southern and eastern Europe and beyond, and Italian families became a big part of town life. Louisville was part of the Long Strike of 1910 to 1914, and the mines closed in the 1950's as the town turned residential.
Why people like it. Louisville has about 32 miles of trails, a Saturday farmers market from May to October, and summer Friday night music at Steinbaugh Pavilion, with U.S. 36 to Denver and Boulder.
Fun fact. The Colacci family kept their original property at 701 Main Street, home of the old Blue Parrot Restaurant, for about 90 years.

Housing and architecture
Old Town Louisville holds 1890s to 1940s miners' cottages and bungalows, many expanded or replaced with new homes that follow the old lots. The 1970s and 1980s built the neighborhoods around Centennial Valley and the Louisville Recreation Center, with Coal Creek Ranch and the Steel Ranch and North End sections adding 1990s to 2010s homes. The Marshall Fire rebuild areas in the Enclave, Centennial Heights and Coal Creek Ranch are now some of the newest construction in the county. Townhomes cluster near Highway 42 and downtown.
Parks and recreation
The Louisville Recreation and Senior Center with its pool and climbing wall, Davidson Mesa's trails and views of the Flatirons, Coal Creek Golf Course, the Coal Creek and Rock Creek trails and Harper Lake serve the city, with Boulder's open space minutes away.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Main Street and Front Street hold the Louisville Street Faire's summer Friday concerts, restaurants, a brewery, the Louisville Center for the Arts and the historical museum. The McCaslin corridor carries the grocery stores and chain retail, and Avista Adventist Hospital is on the city's east side. Boulder Valley schools serve the city.
