About Superior
Superior is the small town at the foot of the Flatirons on the Boulder side of US 36, built almost entirely in the 1990s and 2000s as the Rock Creek Ranch planned community. The Marshall Fire of December 2021 destroyed more than 300 of its homes, and the town has spent the years since rebuilding, with new construction now standing beside the original homes in the Sagamore and Original Town sections. It remains one of the corridor's most sought-after family addresses for its schools, trails and views.
Location
Superior sits on US 36 between Broomfield and Boulder, across the highway from Louisville, with the Flatirons and Boulder's open space to the west and Davidson Mesa to the north. The Flatiron Flyer stops at McCaslin and the Superior Marketplace reach Boulder in ten minutes and Denver in thirty.
History and background
Where it sits. Superior is mostly in Boulder County with a small piece in Jefferson County, between Boulder and Denver, with Louisville to the northeast, Broomfield to the east and south, and U.S. 36 along its northeastern edge.
Superior starts with coal. William Hake came to Colorado during the 1859 gold rush, homesteaded here, and found coal on his land in 1864. The town was founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904, and the name comes from the superior quality of the local coal.
For a long time Superior stayed small, with mine camps and farms. The mine closed in 1945, and the town grew mostly in the 1990's. The Hake Homestead House from 1895 still stands at Grasso Park.
Why people like it. Superior has about 788 acres of parks and open space, nearly 30 miles of trails, tennis and pickleball courts, the historic Grasso Park, and U.S. 36 along its edge.
Fun fact. Grasso Park and its historic buildings were spared when the Marshall Fire swept through Superior in December 2021.

Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
Rock Creek Ranch holds 1990s and 2000s two-story homes and townhomes on curving streets with HOAs, and the Original Town near Coal Creek has a few older homes with new construction filling the lots the fire cleared. The Sagamore neighborhood, largely destroyed in the fire, has been rebuilt with current homes, and Downtown Superior, at the Marketplace, adds newer townhomes, condominiums and apartments.
Parks and recreation
The Superior Community Center, Purple Park, Coal Creek Trail, the Rock Creek trail network and the Marshall Mesa and Davidson Mesa trails serve the town, with Eldorado Canyon and Boulder's open space minutes west. The views of the Flatirons from the Rock Creek neighborhoods are the town's signature.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Downtown Superior and the Superior Marketplace carry the town's restaurants, a Whole Foods, a Target and the Sports Stable, with Louisville's Main Street and Boulder's Pearl Street close by. Boulder Valley schools serve the town, including the Eldorado K-8 and Monarch High School.
