About Lafayette
Lafayette is the easternmost of the three small cities on the Boulder Turnpike corridor, a former coal town whose Old Town along Public Road has become a strip of restaurants, galleries and music venues. It has Waneka Lake at its center, a growing arts scene and prices that sit below Louisville and Superior, which has made it the corridor's choice for first-time buyers and families who want Boulder County schools without Boulder County's top prices.
Location
Lafayette sits along US 287 and South Boulder Road east of Louisville, with Broomfield and Erie to the south and east, Boulder ten miles west and Longmont to the north. Highway 42 and South Boulder Road connect to Louisville and Boulder; US 287 and the Northwest Parkway lead to Denver in about thirty minutes.
History and background
Where it sits. Lafayette is in southeastern Boulder County, with Erie to the north and east, Broomfield to the east and south, and Louisville to the southwest.
Lafayette began with a widow. Mary Miller subdivided her land and sold lots in 1888, naming the town for her late husband, Lafayette Miller. She went on to start the Lafayette Bank and was known as the only woman in the country to head a bank.
Coal was the main business, with the Simpson Mine opening in Old Town in 1888 and miners arriving from England, Wales, Eastern Europe, Mexico, Greece and Japan. The last big mine, Black Diamond, closed in 1956.
Why people like it. Lafayette has Waneka Lake with a 1.2-mile fitness trail inside 147 acres of parkland, and an annual Oatmeal Festival downtown.
Fun fact. Lafayette's Oatmeal Festival, started in 1996 to revitalize downtown, has been billed as the world's largest annual oatmeal festival.

Sources and caveats for this history
Housing and architecture
Old Town Lafayette holds 1890s to 1940s miners' cottages and bungalows, many renovated, on a grid of narrow streets near Public Road. The 1970s and 1980s built the neighborhoods around Waneka Lake and Centaur Village, with Indian Peaks, Coal Creek Village and the Lafayette Tech Center area adding 1990s and 2000s homes. Townhomes and newer construction cluster along South Boulder Road and US 287, and the Flatirons are the view from the western edge.
Parks and recreation
Waneka Lake Park with its boathouse and loop trail, the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center, Indian Peaks Golf Course, the Coal Creek Trail and Thomas Open Space serve the city, with Boulder's trails and the Coal Creek canyon close.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Public Road holds Lafayette's restaurants, breweries, the Arts Hub theater and the summer Art Night Out street festivals, with the Peach Festival each August. South Boulder Road and US 287 carry the grocery stores and chain retail, Good Samaritan Medical Center is on the city's west side, and Boulder Valley schools serve the city.
