About Kennedy

Kennedy is the southeast Denver neighborhood around Kennedy Golf Course and the recreation fields that share its name, between Hampden Avenue and Cherry Creek State Park. Its 1960s to 1980s ranches, two-stories and townhome communities sit minutes from the Tech Center and the state park, and the golf course and the Highline Canal Trail give it more green space than most of the city.

Location

Kennedy runs from Yale Avenue south to Hampden Avenue and beyond to the county line, between Dahlia Street and the Aurora line at Havana, with Indian Creek and Goldsmith to the north, Hampden and Southmoor to the west, Cherry Creek State Park to the east and Greenwood Village and the Tech Center south across Belleview. Hampden, Havana and Interstate 225 are the routes.

History and background

The land that became Kennedy was prairie and farms along the Highline Canal, south of the Cherry Creek Dam completed in 1950, and outside the city until Denver annexed it in the late 1950s and 1960s as part of the push toward the new Interstate 25 corridor.

The neighborhood and its golf course were named for President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963. Kennedy Golf Course opened in 1966 on 240 acres beside the canal, and the subdivisions around it filled through the 1960s and 1970s with the ranches and two-stories of that era.

The Denver Tech Center's growth across Belleview Avenue from the 1970s on made Kennedy a commuter neighborhood for its offices, and the townhome communities of the 1970s and 1980s followed. The expansion of the golf course to 27 holes and the state park's trails have kept it among the greenest corners of the city.

Housing and architecture

The streets hold 1960s and 1970s brick ranches, split-levels and two-stories on quarter-acre lots, with 1970s and 1980s townhome and condominium communities along Hampden, Havana and Yale and some 1990s construction near the golf course. Attached garages, finished basements and HOA-maintained attached homes are typical.

Parks and recreation

Kennedy Golf Course's 27 holes, the Kennedy soccer complex and the Highline Canal Trail define the neighborhood, with Cherry Creek State Park's reservoir, trails, marina and dog park across the eastern boundary. Eisenhower Park's recreation center and the Southmoor light rail station are a short drive west.

Dining, shopping and daily life

Hampden Avenue carries the Tiffany Plaza and Tamarac Square centers with grocery stores, restaurants and a theater, and Havana Street adds more services. The Tech Center's restaurants and the Belleview Station development are ten minutes south, and the Cherry Creek shopping district is fifteen minutes northwest.
