About Wellshire
Wellshire is the south Denver neighborhood between the University area and Cherry Hills Village, built from the 1940s to the 1960s around the city-owned Wellshire Golf Course. Its wide lots, quiet streets and proximity to the Cherry Hills estates have made it one of the most active scrape-and-rebuild neighborhoods in the city, where a 1950s ranch is as likely to sell to a builder as to a family.
Location
Wellshire runs from Yale Avenue south to Hampden Avenue between University Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard, with University Park and Observatory Park to the north, Cherry Hills Village across Hampden and University to the south and west, and Southmoor and the Hampden area to the east. Colorado Boulevard and University are the routes; the Colorado station on the E and H lines is a short drive.
History and background
Wellshire takes its name from the Wellshire Country Club, a private golf course laid out in 1926 on the farmland south of the University of Denver. The club failed in the Depression, and the City of Denver bought the course in 1936, making Wellshire a municipal golf course that has anchored the neighborhood ever since.
The houses around the course were built mostly after the Second World War, in the brick ranch style of the late 1940s and 1950s, as Denver annexed the land between Yale and Hampden avenues. The neighborhood's large lots and its position beside Cherry Hills Village, incorporated in 1945 to keep its own estate character, set it apart from the denser neighborhoods to the north.
By the 2000s those lots had made Wellshire one of the city's most active rebuild neighborhoods, with original ranches giving way to large new homes, especially on the blocks closest to the golf course and the village line.
Housing and architecture
The original stock is 1940s to 1960s brick ranches and a few two-stories on 70- to 100-foot lots. Since the 2000s many have been replaced by large two-story homes, and on the blocks nearest the golf course and Cherry Hills the rebuilds now dominate. There are almost no attached homes; the neighborhood is detached houses throughout.
Parks and recreation
The Wellshire Golf Course, a public city course with a clubhouse used for events, is the neighborhood's centerpiece, with Eisenhower Park and its recreation center, Rosamond Park and the Highline Canal Trail nearby. Observatory Park and the University of Denver's Ritchie Center are a short ride north.
Dining, shopping and daily life
Wellshire is residential; shopping and dining are at the University and Colorado Boulevard corners, along Hampden Avenue, at the Happy Canyon center or in Cherry Creek. The Wellshire Inn restaurant at the golf course is the local landmark, and Slavens School and the Cherry Hills Village schools serve the area.
